Her marriage to Pinkney, in the county's own marriage register — the full-form columns on this page were filled in. Washington County Court Register of Marriages, p. 502 (stitched view: names, ages and birthplaces beside parents, occupation and officiant): 8 Feb 1855 — “Wyatt, Pinkney Washington”, age about 26–28 (hard to read), widowed, born Wilkes County, North Carolina, parents “Barnet & Eleanor Wyatt”, a laborer; bride Margaret Martin (the register has "Harman"), 25, born Rockbridge County, Virginia, daughter of John & Sarah C. Martin; married by Edmund Longley. A second contemporary record naming Barnett and Eleanor as his parents, 24 years before the 1879 one, and it matches the register report's birthplace for him. Likely also the woman who raised James: his mother Frances apparently died soon after his December 1854 birth, and Pinkney remarried here just two months later — so Margaret, who died before 1867, probably was the only mother he knew. That's an inference from the dates; no record says so directly.

The child's name is hard to read (it looks like initials) and she isn't among the children in the register report — a possible fifth child of this couple.
